Packers CB competition now features an injury to Carrington Valentine
The cornerback competition at Green Bay Packers training camp now features an injury that could open the door to a starting job for both a top draft pick and a veteran newcomer.
According to coach Matt LaFleur, starting cornerback Carrington Valentine suffered a leg injury at Sunday's practice and will not practice when the Packers put on the pads for the first time on Monday. He did not provide specifics on the injury or the timetable for his return.
Valentine, who is entering a contract year, has started 30 regular season games over the last three seasons, including 11 of the 17 games in 2025. But he must fight off increased competition to start 2026, and an injury forcing him to miss practice time could create an opening for others.
In Valentine's absence on Sunday, rookie Brandon Cisse got an opportunity to run with the first-team defense opposite Keisean Nixon. Benjamin St-Juste, who has impressed early in camp after arriving as a free agent signee, also got first-team reps and is right in the mix for the job.
Cisse has been commended by both coaches and teammates alike for his combination of athleticism and love for football, and more reps with the first-team defense could help accelerate his development. St-Juste is coming off a rebound season in Los Angeles and is a strong fit as a perimeter cornerback in Jonathan Gannon's system.
Packers Wire will provide updates when more information is available on Valentine's injury.
