New Orleans Saints try out four offensive linemen after 0-2 start
Four offensive linemen tried out for the New Orleans Saints on Tuesday, per the daily update to the NFL transactions wire. And the quality which they all share is versatility. With injuries hammering the Saints at left guard (Trevor Penning missed the first two games with a gnarly foot injury) and right tackle (Taliese Fuaga has been playing through patella tendon inflammation), and multiple backups having gone down in the preseason like Nick Saldiveri, Will Clapp, and Landon Young, it makes sense to scout reinforcements. So who got the invite to Tuesday's tryout?
- Satao Laumea was a sixth-round draft pick by the Seattle Seahawks last year, having played college football at Utah; he lined up at right guard and right tackle. After turning pro he spent some time at left guard but logged 350-plus snaps at right guard across six starts last season.
- Will Sherman started games at both left tackle and right tackle at Colorado, but has moved inside after being drafted in 2021's sixth round by the New England Patriots. He hasn't gotten on the field in a regular season game but did see action at right guard (291 snaps, per Pro Football Focus charting), left guard (145), center (26), and right tackle (24) during the preseason. He spent the last three years with the Denver Broncos.
- Leroy Watson is interesting. He entered the league as a rookie free agent with the Atlanta Falcons back in 2022 and has since gotten into preseason games with multiple teams at left tackle (212) and right tackle (157). He started four games at right tackle with the Tennessee Titans last year, totaling 191 snaps. He played tight end in college at UTSA but has bulked up and focused on his blocking as a pro.
- Aiden Williams may have the strongest connection to the Saints; the rookie from Minnesota-Duluth had a lot of contact with them leading up to the 2025 draft, so he's been on their radar for a while. He was the small school's starting left tackle but got a look at right guard with the Pittsburgh Steelers this summer, and seemed to be doing well until an untimely leg injury sidelined him for two preseason games.
All of these guys look like practice squad candidates. The Saints added backups like Asim Richards (a swing tackle) and Luke Fortner (a center) in last-minute trades before the NFL roster cuts deadline, and they also claimed Xavier Truss (a right tackle listed at guard) off of waivers after that cuts deadline. No one they can add right now is going to shake up the starting lineup, but the depth chart can always be tweaked. Backup left tackle Barry Wesley will come back from injured reserve eventually, but right now the only offensive lineman on the practice squad is undrafted rookie Easton Kilty (who worked at guard and tackle over the summer).
